Player Security: How RNG Certification and Independent Testing Labs Keep Online Games Fair

RNG Certification

Random number generators (RNGs) are what stop online casino games (and you) from knowing what’s happening next. Yeah, you know the lights will flash, and the win will either land or not, but beyond that, the game generates random values and uses them to determine results based on the game’s existing rules and probabilities.

A developer can’t really just create an RNG and expect everyone to believe it’s random.

Independent testing labs assess the RNG, game mathematics, and software before games are approved for regulated markets.

These days, “provably fair” games are setting a new standard for transparency and player fairness. These games rely on crypto gambling rather than traditional payment methods, giving players far better insight into the game’s legitimacy.

Still, RNGs remain a fundamental mechanic at most online casinos.

How RNG Certification and Independent Testing Labs Work

RNG certification is basically independent proof that the random number generator works as it’s supposed to.

Testing laboratories can look at everything from the actual RNG algorithm to the source code behind it. They’ll also run statistical tests across huge amounts of RNG output to see whether the numbers behave randomly and whether there are any strange patterns.

Testing requirements typically include:

  • Reviewing RNG documentation
  • Checking the algorithm for known weaknesses
  • Reviewing source code
  • Statistically testing raw RNG output
  • Testing scaled results and shuffled card data

If something fails, the supplier has to fix it. It’s then tested again.

And the laboratory can’t just be anyone with a computer. In the UK, for example, approved test houses must meet specific accreditation requirements, including ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

How RNG Certification and Independent Testing Keep Online Games Fair

The main thing they’re checking is that outcomes aren’t predictable or being changed depending on how you’re playing.

RNG output should be unpredictable and properly distributed and shouldn’t reproduce identical output streams. The mapping between those random values and the actual game results must also follow the game’s stated probabilities and paytable.

So, for example, a slot shouldn’t suddenly decide you’ve lost enough and make the next spin more likely to win. It also shouldn’t decide you’ve won too much and quietly make the next ten spins worse.

Independent testing is essential because the developers are outside the business, testing whether the system meets the regulator’s technical standards. That doesn’t mean you’ll win, obviously. Fairness means the game follows its certified mathematics and rules.

What Other Certifications Do Online Games Need?

RNG testing is only one part of the process.

Independent laboratories can also test the actual game to check:

  • Theoretical RTP
  • Game mathematics
  • Paytables
  • Rules displayed to players
  • Bonus features
  • Mapping of RNG values to game results
  • Actual RTP through simulations
  • Software implementation

Certain operators should also submit game test reports, RNG test results, and security audit reports. Exactly what else a game needs depends on where it’s being released. Different gambling jurisdictions have different technical standards, licensing requirements, and approved laboratories.

Seeing that a game uses an RNG isn’t really enough by itself. The interesting part is whether that RNG and the rest of the game have actually been independently tested.

When you play an online game using an RNG, if it’s a regulated game, an independent testing lab will always have certified that it was doing the job it should be doing in order to be random. Without it, online games using RNG wouldn’t be fair.
