Meta is Shutting Down the VR Version of Horizon Worlds

Meta Kills Horizon Worlds VR — $80 Billion Too Late

VR Version of Horizon Shutdown

Meta is shutting down the VR version of Horizon Worlds. Starting June 15, 2026, Quest headset users will no longer be able to access the platform, bringing a quiet but definitive end to Zuckerberg's most expensive bet.

The app will be pulled from the Quest Store even sooner — by March 31 — along with specific worlds including Horizon Central, Events Arena, Kaiju, and Bobber Bay. After June 15, Horizon Worlds survives only as a mobile app.

The timing makes the failure hard to ignore. Reality Labs, the Meta division that built and ran Horizon Worlds, posted a $6.02 billion operating loss in Q4 alone. Total losses tied to the metaverse push are estimated at around $80 billion.

The platform never broke a few hundred thousand monthly active users — a fraction of what Roblox pulls in daily. For a product that was supposed to replace how people work, socialise, and spend time online, it never came close.

"We are separating the two platforms so each can grow with greater focus, and the Horizon Worlds platform will become a mobile-only experience." — Meta, official announcement, March 2026

Meta Horizon Plus subscribers will lose Horizon-specific perks — Meta Credits, digital clothing, avatars, and in-world purchases — by March 31 as well. Core gaming benefits are unaffected. The Hyperscape Capture social sharing feature is also being discontinued by March 24, though existing captures remain viewable in a standalone app.

Meta has shifted its focus entirely to artificial intelligence, forecasting at least $115 billion in AI spending this year.

The company says it remains the largest investor in VR and has future Quest hardware in development, but Horizon Worlds, as a VR destination, is finished. What started as the next frontier of computing ends as a mobile app that few will notice.
