X Now Sells Premium Usernames for Up to Millions

X launches Handle Marketplace where Premium users can buy inactive usernames. Prices range from free to $1M+

X Handle Marketplace

Elon Musk's X has officially opened the doors to its long-awaited Handle Marketplace, transforming dormant usernames into premium digital real estate that could cost you anywhere from free to seven figures. The move marks a significant shift in how social media platforms manage their most valuable asset: identity.

The marketplace, which X bills as an "industry-first initiative," addresses a problem that's plagued the platform since its Twitter days—billions of desirable usernames sitting unused on abandoned accounts.

For users who joined late to the party, finding a clean, memorable handle has been nearly impossible. Now, Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers can finally claim those coveted @names, though access comes with strings attached.

Two Tiers, Two Very Different Price Tags

X has divided available handles into two distinct categories that reflect their perceived value. Priority handles—think full names like @GabrielJones, multi-word phrases like @PizzaEater, or alphanumeric combinations like @ParadoxAI—are free to request for paying subscribers.

If approved within the typical three-business-day review window, users can claim these handles at no additional cost beyond their subscription.

The real eye-opener comes with Rare handles: short, generic, or culturally significant usernames like @Pizza, @Tom, or @One. These digital status symbols aren't up for simple requests.

Instead, they're distributed through two exclusive channels: Public Drops, which are free but merit-based (considering your contributions to X and platform engagement), and Direct Purchases, which are invitation-only and carry fixed price tags.

According to X's FAQ page, these premium handles can range from $2,500 to over seven figures, depending on demand and uniqueness.

The Fine Print: What You're Actually Getting

When you acquire a new handle through the marketplace, your digital identity gets a facelift without the baggage. Your followers, posts, and account settings remain completely unchanged during the switch. Your old handle gets frozen and won't be available to anyone else, though X may offer redirect options for select accounts in the future at an additional cost.

There's one critical catch: handles acquired through the marketplace are non-transferable, and selling or buying handles outside the platform could result in account suspension. This policy aims to curb the secondary market that's long been a security headache for social platforms.

For Priority handles, there's an additional caveat—if you cancel or downgrade your Premium subscription, your original handle returns after a 30-day grace period. Rare handles purchased directly, however, remain yours even if your subscription lapses.

The marketplace represents Musk's latest monetization push since acquiring the platform in 2022. While some users see opportunity—especially creators and entrepreneurs seeking memorable usernames—others question whether digital identity should be commodified based on payment ability and platform status.

For now, if you've been eyeing that perfect handle, you can add it to your Watchlist through the "Register your interest" feature. X will notify you if it becomes available, though there's no guarantee of when—or if—that might happen.
