FBI Shuts Down Major Video Game Piracy Networks Costing Industry $170 Million

FBI seized several illicit video game marketplaces

Federal authorities have dismantled several prominent video game piracy websites that facilitated over 3.2 million illegal downloads in just three months, dealing a significant blow to global software piracy operations.

The FBI's Atlanta Field Office announced the seizure of seven major piracy domains, including nsw2u.com, nswdl.com, game-2u.com, bigngame.com, ps4pkg.com, ps4pkg.net, and mgnetu.com. These criminal marketplaces had operated for more than four years, providing pirated copies of highly anticipated video games days or weeks before their official release dates.

The scope of the operation becomes clear when examining the financial impact. Between February 28, 2025, and May 28, 2025, alone, records show these sites facilitated 3.2 million downloads through their primary distribution service, resulting in an estimated $170 million in losses to the gaming industry.

This three-month period represents just a fraction of the sites' total operational timeframe, suggesting the actual financial damage extends far beyond these figures.

The seized domains now display federal seizure banners notifying visitors that the sites have been taken down by authorities. The FBI worked in coordination with the Dutch FIOD (Fiscal Information and Investigation Service) to execute this international operation, highlighting the cross-border nature of digital piracy enforcement.

This takedown represents a significant victory in the ongoing battle against software piracy, particularly targeting the pre-release distribution networks that cause substantial revenue losses to game developers and publishers during critical launch windows.
