Here is the major announcement for all bloggers and site admin that search giant Google today updated its algorithm to rank sites it labels as “mobile-friendly” higher on mobile search results. Mostly Google never announces algorithm changes in advance, but this time Google have notify for the update on February only.

Google is now using this label as a ranking factor across all languages worldwide; the update applies to individual pages, not entire websites. As a result, searchers get “high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.”

A webpage is eligible for the “mobile-friendly” label if it meets the following criteria, as detected in real time by Googlebot:
  • Avoid software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • Uses text that is readable without zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
Google have provided a tool by which users can easily recognize the site responsive. You can check your site for the Mobile friendly by running the Mobile-Friendly Test .

Note, if you have not made your site mobile friendly yet, it isn’t too late, you can always go ahead and do it in the future and benefit from this mobile friendly algorithm. Search Engine Land  have provide a list of the most common questions around this mobile update, you can read them over here.
